Takashi Tomo-Oka [photography]

Artist photographer Takashi Tomo-oka's work is about
stillness and restraint. His subject is mainly flowers
and plants, and begins with a patient study of the
shape of a plant as it grows.Watching how a stem curves,
how a bloom opens. He then makes a sketch,
creating a diagram of how he wants the plant
to look as a photograph, accounting for the ample white
space that gives his images their modern edge.

Printing on washi paper, has a softening effect upon
these austere photographs .

These works embody the principles of WABI-SABI—an
aesthetic ideal based on finding beauty in
imperfection and impermanence.
These works explore not just the beauty of plants
but also their dark side—dying leaves or ones
eaten by bugs, rotting berries, even poisonous weeds …

WABI- SABI :

Pared down to its barest essence, wabi-sabi is the Japanese art of finding beauty in imperfection and profundity in nature, of accepting the natural cycle of growth, decay, and death. It's simple, slow, and uncluttered-and it reveres authenticity above all.

Wabi-sabi is underplayed and modest, the kind of quiet, undeclared beauty that waits patiently to be discovered.
